What a session sounds like
Sensei So the geometric mean is the constant rate that gets you from your starting wealth to your ending wealth. With returns of plus 60, minus 40 and plus 10 percent, that is 1.83 percent a year, even though the simple average is 10.
You Wait. How can the average be 10 percent if I barely made money?
Sensei Because the 40 percent loss hit a bigger balance than the one you started with. A dollar became 1.60, then 0.96, then 1.056. The arithmetic mean treats each year as if you started fresh with a dollar. The geometric mean follows the actual dollar. Want to try one?
You Go on.
Sensei Returns of 20, minus 10 and 5 percent. Geometric mean, closest to 4.28, 4.47 or 5 percent?
What it will do
- Teach any lesson aloud, in the same exam-first order as the site: the outcome, the idea, the worked example, the traps.
- Take interruptions. Ask "why?" or "say that again with numbers" at any point and it answers, then picks up where it stopped.
- Ask you questions. Spoken checkpoints in the exam's format, with the reasoning when you miss.
- Remember. Your weak topics, the traps you fall for and where you stopped, and it plans your next session around them.
- Go where reading can't: the commute, the gym, a walk, the last hour of a long day.
